The daguerreotype is one of the earliest types of photograph in which the image is exposed directly onto a mirror-polished surface of silver bearing a coating of silver halide particles deposited by iodine vapor.

Zachary Taylor, Nominee
Joseph Andrews, a line engraver, based an unfinished picture on a daguerreotype taken in the summer of 1848. Taylor's horses and his Baton Rouge house are in the background. Because of the Mother of Pearl case that houses this daguerreotype, it was probably given to a family member. Beautiful lighting by a professional. Photographer unknown.
